Basketball was invented by the American James Naismith in 1891, and the earliest basketball competition rules were also formulated by Naismith.

The purpose of the basketball rules he formulated at that time was:

(2) It is not allowed to walk or run with the ball in your hand;

(3) Players may go anywhere on the field as long as they do not affect or interfere with the opposing players;

(4) Physical contact between athletes and athletes is not allowed;

(5)The hoop should be level.

Based on these five basic principles, Mr. Naismith developed the original basketball game rules, a total of 13:

1. A player can throw the ball in any direction with one or both hands.

2. the player can use one hand or two hands in any direction to grab, play, but must not hit with fists.

3. Players can't walk with the ball.

4. must use the hand ball, not allowed to use the head, feet to kick.

5. do not allow players to use shoulder bump, hand pull, hand push, hand beat, foot trip and other methods to deal with the other side of the team. Any player who violates this rule, the first time is considered to be a foul, the second time is a foul, will be forced to stop the game, until hit a ball can return to the game. If there is intent to injure an opposing player, he is disqualified from the entire game and no substitute is allowed.

6. The use of boxing balls is a violation of Rules 3 and 4.

7. If either side fouls three times in a row, the other side will be counted as a shot. Continuous foul means: in a period of time, the other team does not commit a foul, and the team has committed a foul.

8. if the defender does not touch the ball or interfere with the ball, when the ball is put into the basket and stays in the basket, it is considered a middle basket. If the ball stops on the basket, and the opposing team touches the basket, it is also a ball.

9. when the ball is out of bounds, the ball will be thrown into the field by the first person to contact the ball. If there is a dispute, the referee throws the ball into the field. The throw-in is allowed for 5 seconds, if more than 5 seconds, the ball is awarded to the opposing team.

10. The referee is the player's referee and has the right to call fouls. When a team commits three consecutive fouls, he will inform the deputy referee. He has the right to disqualify a player.

11. The associate umpire is the referee of the ball, who decides when the ball is in play, time the ball, determine the hit of the ball, record the number of shots hit, and assumes the usual responsibilities of the umpire.

12. The match is played in two 15-minute periods with a 5-minute break in between.

13. The team with the most hits wins, and in the event of a tie, with the consent of the captains of both teams, the game may be postponed until another hit.

Although the original 13 basketball competition rules were not systematic and complete, and some provisions were not clear enough, they played a great role in promoting the development of basketball in the early days.
