Basketball was introduced to China very early. In 1895, it was introduced to Chinese people by American Bob Gailey.

In 1975, the Chinese Men's Basketball team won the 8th Asian Men's Basketball Championship and the 8th Asian Games in 1978.

In 1976, the Chinese women's Basketball team won the gold medal at the 6th Asian Women's Basketball Championship for the first time, and then won the gold medal at the 9th Asian Games, and won the third place at the 9th World Women's Basketball Championship and the 23rd Olympic Games, and the second place at the 25th Olympic Games, and entered the ranks of the world's strong teams.

On the basis of ranking first in Asia, the men's basketball team entered the top eight in the world for the first time at the 12th World Men's Basketball Championship in 1994.

In 1997, the State Sports Commission established the professional basketball management Center, which took an important step in the reform of the management system, that is, the traditional A-League was changed to CBA league.

Under the guidance of the reform of the competition system, China's basketball has accelerated the process of professionalism, industrialization and internationalization, attracting a large number of domestic and foreign enterprises, and well-known enterprises such as "Hilton", "555" and MOTOROLA have poured in.

In 1998, the Chinese University Sports Association successfully organized the CUBA National College Basketball League with the support of enterprises.

In 2004, the Chinese Basketball Association underwent a comprehensive reform, combining the League A and B and the league B into one, and established the China Men's Basketball League, referred to as the CBL League (later renamed NBL).

In 2005, the CBA officially changed its name to "China Men's Basketball Professional League" and abolished the previous promotion and relegation system in favor of an admittance system.
